It&#rsquo;s not because organizations lack the desire to adopt disaster recovery, it&#rsquo;s because the constrictive contracts, inflexible environments, and high price points that come with traditional options makes it prohibitive to do so. The cloud changes that.

VMware&#rsquo;s new recovery-as-a-service offering gives midsize businesses an affordable option for disaster recovery. VMware vCloud® Hybrid Service™ — Disaster Recovery helps you fulfill the need to implement or supplement your continuity plans while addressing budget, time, and resource constraints. If you&#rsquo;re interested in getting started with the service, keep in mind the following tips:

1. Understand the Service Offering

vCloud Hybrid Service — Disaster Recovery is a recovery-as-a-service solution owned and operated by VMware. Built on vSphere®, the service offers VMware customers replication, mirroring, and disaster recovery in a cloud environment.

2. Select the Right Size and Term Options

Disaster Recovery operates as a standalone service offering with flexible term-based subscription options available in 1-, 12-, 24-, and 36-months. Feature add-ons are also available to help you meet your recovery needs as they change over time.

Determine which size and term options are right for your organization based on the number of virtual machines running and their storage and compute capacities.

3. Define Your Disaster Recovery Policy Settings

After defining what you need to protect, the next step is to establish your recovery-point objective; the timeframe you have to recover data after an outage or disaster. vCloud Hybrid Service — Disaster Recovery supports a full range of RPOs allowed in vSphere Replication — from 15 minutes up to 24 hours.

4. Prepare for Purchase and Deployment

Prepare for your purchase and deployment with these vCloud Hybrid Service —Disaster Recovery prerequisites: VMware vSphere 5.1 or higher, VMware vCenter 5.1 or higher, vSphere Replication 5.6 (a specific version for vCloud Hybrid Service that doesn&#rsquo;t require special licensing) and public Internet connectivity.
